RADIATION PROTECTION MATERIALS PROJECT

PROJECT GOAL

To extend service life of space crafts (SC) using the new-type radiation protection based on polymer composite materials.

APPLICATION

ROCKET ENGINEERING

CHALLENGES DESIGNATED BY THE PROJECT:

  • to develop more effective material as compared to traditionally used aluminum with similar surface density;
  • to develop an easier material as compared to aluminum with similar protective efficiency;
  • to ensure by half the extension of satellite service life using the material developed;
  • mine shaft sinking: DMC Mining Services.

Up to date within the project the experimental technology and equipment are developed within the project for making flat 100х100 mm screens for device cases and certain elements of electronics.

Results:

The results of simulation tests during direct electron beam exposure using electrostatic accelerator lead to conclusions that disperse-filled composites, containing over 35% of tungsten or over 45% of zirconium, stand as the most effective materials. Protective efficiency of materials exceeds that of aluminum by 30-40%.

The results of studies performed have been handed over to project customer for technical examination, as well as published in American edition of the Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering in order get feedbacks and assessments from foreign colleagues.

Presently the works to develop technology for making irregular shape protection screens based on disperse-filled layered materials and composites are in progress.

Application of materials developed allows significant extension of SC service life due to decrease of accumulated radiation dose.
