Steelmaking equipment

  The basic materials for steelmaking process are pig iron and steel scrap. The essence of any metallurgical process when converting iron into steel consists in reduction of the carbon and impurities’ content by way of their selective oxidation and conversion into slag; the gases are converted during melting process. Iron is converted into steel in melting facilities with different principle of operation: open-hearth furnaces, oxygen converters and electric furnaces. Open-hearth furnaces are not currently used in metallurgy because of its low efficiency. The steelmaking practice became widely used at present time in oxygen converters followed by steel teeming process on continuous casting machines.

 

    Melting electric furnaces are used for melting high-alloyed structural, tool or special steels and alloys. The melting electric furnaces can be arc and induction furnaces. Steel-teeming ladles are produced for steelmaking shops at the enterprise to receive molten metal from steelmaking unit and transfer it to steel casting area, slag ladles, slag pots, ingot moulds and pallets.
